Poppy Cottage Garden is an inspirational plantsman’s garden set within the Roseland Heritage Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This delightful cottage garden is about an acre of individual garden rooms with central lawns, colour themed borders, effusive planting and sunny nooks in which to bask. There is a small orchard at the far end of the garden with unusual chickens and miniature ducks.
Planting includes unusual herbaceous plants and bulbs, grasses, shrubs, trees and more tender exotics. We are lucky to be just over a mile from the sea on well-drained soil so can grow a wide range of desirable plants.
Some of the unusual plants grown in the garden are often available for sale.
We have done much planting in 2017 and 2018. We like to garden for wildlife, with a variety of different plants flowering for as long as possible through the year. It is important to us the garden looks natural, with plants that sit well in their surroundings and look like they belong there.
Already there has been an increase in wildlife – people have commented on the large number of different butterflies in the garden, some plants smothered in bees, and the pond attracted a lot of dragonflies this spring.
We will continue to redevelop some areas – 2018 has been a difficult year for gardening and no planting has taken place during the summer due to the drought! We have kept the colour themed areas but the plants themselves may have changed a little.
*New for 2018* the main orchard area and pond is transforming into a home for wildlife, the pond has been planted with native water plants and the orchard will be sown with wildflowers and grasses, as well as a range of bulbs suitable for wildlife.
