We had the honour of taking over the Garden at Poppy Cottage in early 2017 from Tina and Dave Primmer, and will continue in the same fashion by opening to the public.
We bring with us an established business in The Flower Bulb Company, selling spring and summer flowering bulbs, tubers, rhizomes and corms online and occasionally at plant fairs.
Taking on such a beautiful, established garden is very exciting and challenging! We maintained the garden for 2017 and then began to plant our own schemes in the gaps between the shrubs. Although we didn’t get to see the garden before we moved here, we believe there may have been many annual plants used as there are plenty of gaps in the borders. So far in 2018 we have been working to establish more perennial herbaceous plants in these.
We like to garden for wildlife. We like the plants to look as though they belong where they sit within the borders, and we are big fans of those that self seed. Very often these are the happy accidents that bring a scheme together or produce some wonderful combinations not thought of before.
We are also big fans of late winter and early spring plants such as hellebores and snowdrops, and we hope to establish an impressive display of these. In future years this will allow us to open for special days in late winter/early spring.
We will also be continuing with the tea room, plant sales and a collection of interesting poultry (some of which is for sale)! We have expanded provisions at the tea room during the busy period of May to July and have chosen to serve coffee from Westcountry roasters Owens.
We look forward to meeting you and until then, please follow us on any of our social media accounts!
