We had the honour of taking over the Garden at Poppy Cottage in early 2017 from Tina and Dave Primmer, and will continue in the same fashion by opening to the public.
Taking on such a beautiful, established garden was very exciting and challenging! We maintained the garden for 2017 and then began to plant our own schemes in the gaps between the shrubs. Although we didn’t see the garden before we moved here, we believe there may have been many annual and bedding plants used as there were plenty of gaps in the borders. 2018 was a challenging year for gardening so we used 2019 to establish a few new plants.
We like to garden for wildlife. We like the plants to look as though they belong where they sit within the borders, and we are big fans of those that self seed. Very often these are the happy accidents that bring a scheme together or produce some wonderful combinations not thought of before.
We are also big fans of late winter and early spring plants such as hellebores and snowdrops, and we hope to establish an impressive display of these. In future years this will allow us to open for special days in late winter/early spring.
As with any garden, it is evolving. Wooden structures have suffered with time and need removing. Some of the planting has either disappeared or tried to take over neighbouring borders, so we are editing all the time.
We will also be continuing with plant sales and a collection of interesting poultry, some of which is for sale!
We look forward to meeting you and until then, please follow us on any of our social media accounts!
